From marathons to fitness parties to sports, Bangaloreans have never backed down from a healthy challenge. So much so that the city is now hailed as the new fitness capital of India. This claim was put to test recently by one of Bangalore’s biggest chain of gyms, the Power World Gyms, in their own fitness challenge. Here’s what happened.
Founded by Talavou F. Alailima, a South Asian Games medallist and a NCAA All-American Athlete, Power World Gyms has for long been driven by the passion of spreading fitness among the people. In the same spirit, Power World Gyms, Bangalore had recently organised a ‘Power Fitness Challenge’ supported by Gympik India’s largest fitness aggregator, Smoodies and MuscleBlaze.
Aimed to test the mettle of the average Bangalorean while also spreading the message of fitness, this event was held on 10th September at Power World Gyms, Kudlu Gate branch between 10 am and 12 pm. The challenge itself was divided into three individual competitions: Burpees, Push-ups, and Plank.
Open to both men and women above 18 years of age, participants had to register and take part in any of these three competitions. Organized into groups of 5, the winner was decided based on whoever performed the best within each group. Prizes included branded gym bags, fancy sippers, skipping ropes and even a 10% discount (or a one-month extension for the already existing members) on Power World Gyms membership fees.

Carried out under the watchful eyes of the certified Power World Gym trainers and volunteers from Gympik, the challengers were all given a demo of the exercises first. Only after making sure that the rules, terms and conditions had been thoroughly understood, were the participants allowed to go ahead with the challenges.
While the challenges themselves were interesting, it was the epic performance put up by participants, which made the Power Fitness Challenge so successful. Who would have thought that on a Sunday morning so many people would have turned up at Kudlu Gate from across the city just to take part in a fitness event? This happens only in Namma Bengaluru!
The level of enthusiasm in the crowd could be seen during the performance of the challenge. One of the challengers performed 104 push-ups, while another performed a whopping 11-minute plank! Someone performed 113 burpees while at least one of the challengers dared to participate in two events at once! It has to be kept in mind that we are talking about average Bangaloreans from all genders and walks of life!
After such a strenuous event, it is only fair to look around for some refreshments. In this case, the participants refuelled with Epigamia’s flavoured greek yoghurt while quenching their thirsts with the delicious yet super healthy Smoodies! In fact, the treats were so delicious, many couldn’t stop themselves at just one helping.

At 12 pm sharp, the curtains came down and soon it was time for announcing the winners. We can only imagine how hard selecting the winners would have been for the judges, given the impressive performance by each and every participant. The prizes were given away by John Paul Rajesh, the Deputy General Manager of Bangalore Operations for Power World Gyms and Amaresh Ojha, the CEO of Gympik Health Solutions.
Shortly thereafter, MuscleBlaze held a mini-challenge for the Power World trainers and centre managers. As expected the Power World trainers sailed through the challenge even as the crowd cheered them on. The winners for this mini-event were presented with gym bags and shakers by MuscleBlaze while all the trainers received medals as a token of appreciation for their help in making the event a solid success.
With such an amazing turnout and even more impressive performance by average Bangaloreans, it was quite clear that when it comes to fitness, Bangalore can give every other state, a run for their money. So does Bangalore really qualify as the fitness capital of India? Hell yeah! Keep it up Bangalore and see you at the next challenge!
